About the Mercosur Youth Symphony |
The MYS has been continuously increasing its educational profile for the last ten years, and has become a symphonic ensemble that is primarily identified with a thorough training for young musicians through the orchestral experience. The Mercosur Youth Symphony Orchestra consists of one hundred young musicians from the four countries of the Southern Common Market. Its first meeting during the month of July 97´ took place in the historic site of Luján, home of one of South Americas landmarks, the imposing neo-gothic Cathedral. The Orchestra performed in several centers throughout the Province of Buenos Aires with an enormous impact on the local press and several International newspapers as well. The goal established for these frequent meetings is the regional integration of criteria in the field of symphonic work that will allow a significant familiarization and exchange among the members of the different orchestral schools. This unification enables the orchestra to develop a higher definition of its personality with each meeting and to be considered internationally as a highly representative institution of this region of the globe. According to the scheme conceived by the UNESCO for a Worldwide System for Youth and Children Orchestras, the MYS proposes a yearly forum wherein music educators of the region will discuss among other topics the role of symphonic music as a means to promote social development. Another important matter is the strong program in orchestral development that every young player receives during these forums. It consists of series of classes in which the members of the orchestra become acquainted with innovative concepts of leadership and managerial tools. The opening night on July 31st 1997 in the historical Cathedral of Luján, marked the launching of the Program for Regional Integration and Social Development created by this MYS; its first goal being the establishment of several Childrens Orchestras in the Greater Buenos Aires. The MYS aims to create not only a number of artistic casts in the area but also a model for the inclusion of marginal youth to societys mainstream. The support of the UNESCO Cooperating with the orchestra's educational profile, the UNESCO made a very valuable contribution by sending two of its most well-known trainers; the world delegate for the UNESCO's Youth Orchestra System, Dr. José Antonio Abreu of Venezuela indicated that the Mercosur Youth Orchestra would benefit with the presence of Antoine Duhamel (brass) and Roberto Zambrano (cello). These wonderful trainers worked for 12 in sectionals until the technical results were achieved in order to present the first concert. Regional Integration On March 31st 1997, several conductors of youth orchestras from this region gathered to determine that the creation of such an orchestra was an important step in establishing a Youth Orchestra System in the area. This orchestra should meet at least once a year in different centers throughout the MERCOSUR. During these meetings there will be events that are connected not only with performance, but also the new didactical approaches that need to be taken in order to feed correctly such a revolutionary system. Emphasis is given on mastering the instrument through collective practice rather than a solitary activity of the student. Other concerts and venues The MYS has performed at the University of Morón presenting the prizewinner pianist Facundo Cruz with Rachmaninoff's First Piano Concerto. More recently the orchestra gathered in the Province of San Luis, Argentina. This province is one of the forerunners of the MERCOSUR economical agreement and hosted two megapresentations of the MYS in the cities of San Luis and Villa Mercedes.
