Alejandro Drago violinist
The foundation of Alejandro Dragos life in music began as a small child when he accompanied his mother to Argentinean venues in which she performed as a tango dancer. Inspired by the beauty of tango musical arrangements, he began to insist that he wanted to play the violin. His mother, somewhat reluctantly, introduced him to Antonio Agri, who spent more than twenty years as a violinist with Astor Piazolla. She indicated that her son appeared to have a passing interest in learning to play. Agri, soon impressed by the intensity of the young boys interest, recommended him to a member of his string ensemble who instructed him in the basics of music theory.
Further development came under the tutelage of Elias Khayat and Szimsia Bajour in Argentina. Subsequent skills incorporated active participation in chamber music courses as well as master classes in Argentina and Brazil. Since 1985, his training has included the guidance of Ljerko Spiller, Gabriel Banat, Jacques Israelevitch, Chaim Taub, Leon Spierer and Alberto Lysy. Being awarded the Camerata Bariloche Foundation Scholarship allowed additional study with this world famous ensembles soloists, as well as with invited teachers.
A scholarship from the Russian government in 1991 provided an opportunity to pursue his education in Moscow. The five-year program at the Chaikovsky Conservatory included classes with Professor Marina Yashvili. He obtained his B.M. in 1996.
During the 1995/1996 season, he was a member of the Moscow Conservatory Early Music Ensemble Homo Ludens.
He frequently performs as a recitalist and soloist in major Argentinean cities as well as with the leading orchestras of Argentina. Performances abroad in Russia, Lithuania, Belarus, France, Yugoslavia, Ecuador and Paraguay include those in prestigious concert halls such as the Great Hall at the Moscow Conservatory, the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Hall (with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra in the Bruch Violin Concerto) and the Kolarac Zal of Belgrade.
Since 1998, he has coordinated the string program for the Fundacion Orquesta Mercosur, a foundation created to promote musical education and orchestral training for the youth of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. He has overseen the technical preparation of the string group in the yearly meeting of its youth symphony since 1997. Additionally, in February, 1999, he taught violin and chamber music courses during the First Mercosur Music Seminar, held in Pinamar, Argentina where he presented his Seven Studies for Violin.
Currently, he also devotes himself to providing a wide range of musical instruction in diverse environments. As an orchestral coach, he has given seminars and workshops since 1988. He has developed an intensive schedule as a private instructor to accommodate students who are members of most of the large youth and professional orchestras in Argentina. Also, close collaboration with the musical development of young composers from Latin American and other countries has resulted in presentations in leading concert halls of Buenos Aires, Paris, Moscow and Kaunas.
A very important place among his musical activities is occupied by tango and other Argentinean folkloric music. He was the founder and director of Moskva Tango, an ensemble fully devoted to the popularization of tango in Eastern Europe. He performed with tango musicians such as Atilio Stamponi, Orlando Marconi, Carlos Buono, Osvaldo Berlingieri and Osvaldo Piro. In addition, he was invited as an assistant concertmaster of the National Orchestra of Argentinean Music during its European Tournee in 1998, performing in halls such as the Stockholm Academie of Music and La Sorbonne in Paris.
Folkloric music interests also consist of the authoring of numerous arrangements of gypsy, Hungarian, Russian and Romanian folk music for string ensembles.
